Kansai Yamamoto the 1970’s Design icon, worn notably by David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust tour.1972. Kansai’s extravagant images draw on the rich palette of Imperial Oriental History, textiles some resemble visual themes that can be found in vivid Japanese theatre back drops and curtains that illustrate legendary figures. The famous Hokusai’s print The Great Wave off Kanagawa inspired a Kansai Yamamoto robe.
Kansai studied civil engineering at school. Subsequently, When Kansai was 28, having already set up his own business, Harpers & Queen featured Kansai on his debut cover for their “Explosion from Tokyo” issue.

Damien Hirst “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, Venice
We feature exclusive photos from the Punta Della Dogana exhibition.
– Punta della Dogana – Pinault Collection presents “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable”. It is the first major solo exhibition dedicated to Damien Hirst in Italy since the 2004 retrospective at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (“The Agony and Ecstasy”) and is curated by Elena Geuna, curator of the monographic shows dedicated to Rudolf Stingel (2013) and Sigmar Polke (2016) presented at Palazzo Grassi.
The exhibition is displayed across 5,000 square meters of museum space and marks the first time that Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, the two Venetian venues of the Pinault Collection, are both dedicated to a single artist.
Damien Hirst’s most ambitious and complex project to date, “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” has been almost ten years in the making. Exceptional in scale and scope, the exhibition tells the story of the ancient wreck of the ship Unbelievable and presents what was discovered of its precious cargo: the impressive collection of Aulus Calidius Amotan, a freed slave better known as Cif Amotan II, destined to the legendary temple dedicated to the Sun.
The exhibition highlights the longstanding relationship shared by the artist and the Pinault Collection. A key artist for the Collection, Damien Hirst’s work has previously been exhibited at Palazzo Grassi, where it featured in the museum’s 2006 inaugural exhibition “Where Are We Going?”. With “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable”, the Pinault Collection accompanies the British artist in making a dream come true by opening both Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, allowing the artworks to establish a dialogue between the two exhibitions spaces.
The 2017 exhibition is part of a calendar of monographic shows dedicated to major contem- porary artists – Urs Fischer (2012), Rudolf Stingel (2013), Martial Raysse (2015) and Sigmar Polke (2016) – alternating with thematic exhibitions of works from the Pinault Collection.

Frankie Dettori & ENABLE win the Investec Oaks on Ladies Day at Epsom. 2017.
Enable ran out an impressive winner of the Investec Oaks at Epsom in the hands of Frankie Dettori.
John Gosden’s filly was a 6-1 shot for a mile-and-a-half Classic run in driving rain after a thunderstorm hit the track just minutes before the off.
Pocket full of dreams took the field along for much of the way, but was a spent force heading inside the final three furlongs.
Her stablemate Rhododendron, the 8-11 favourite after finishing second to fellow Aidan O’Brien inmate Winter in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, loomed up ominously, but Enable was also delivered with her challenge and the pair settled down to fight it out.
Rhododendron briefly looked to be travelling the better, but her stamina appeared to give out passing the furlong marker and the further Enable went the better she looked and there was five lengths between them at the line. Alluringly was third.
Gosden said: “We knew there’d be a strong pace, but I didn’t think quite that strong.
O’Brien, whose runners had suffered a marked delay in getting to the track after travel problems in Ireland, said of Rhododendron: “I thought she ran very well, everything went lovely and she ran a good race.
There was drama before the off when American challenger Daddys Lil Darling bolted to the start, with Olivier Peslier deciding to bail out just before she reached the stalls.
Kenny McPeek commented “Hopefully the filly is OK, we’ll get back and regroup. I haven’t thought beyond today, but I will be back, you can’t predict that.”

Palermo, Byzantine & Greek influences for La Martorano church dating back to 1143. Built by an Admiral of Roger 11, the Norman King of Sicily, Admiral George of Antioch.
La Martorana, Palermo, Sicily
The church known as La Martorana is in Palermo’s Piazza Bellini, next to the church of San Cataldo. It was founded in 1143 by an admiral of King Roger II’s, George of Antioch, whose rank gave it the original name of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio. The building of the church took place at much the same time as the construction of Roger’s Palatine Chapel, in the Palazzo dei Normanni. It is likely that the same artists and craftsmen were involved in creating the mosaics for both. There are strong Greek and Byzantine influences in the mosaics of Christ, the Madonna and the saints. Two other panels show George of Antioch prostrating himself before the Madonna, and Roger II being crowned king by Christ. This image is a highly political one, as it showed that Roger considered he had God’s authority to rule, rather than requiring the Pope’s. Courtesy & with thanks www.alamy.com
Palermo,Sicily, Palazzo Mirto
Located in the historic center of Palermo, Palazzo Mirto was home to the old, aristocratic Filangeri family for four centuries. They were given the title of Princes of Mirto (from the name of their feud in the region of Messina) in the mid-17th century.
Those were the days when the Palazzo was originally built, though several remodellings took place over the centuries.
The more recent changes were made in 1876, when the façade along Via Merlo was redesigned and a new entrance was built with a marquise, as was the fashion in Paris. In the same years, the restructuring of the second floor rooms led to a big apartment for the family.
From that time on, the first floor was used by the Filangeris only when they entertained guests: it is now a series of lavishly decorated “public” rooms, with walls adorned with silk panels, tapestries, curtains and works of art.
There is also a Chinese living room, very fashionable in the 18th and 19th centuries; its walls and ceiling are decorated with scenes of everyday life set in imaginary Oriental-style architectures.
Typically Sicilian, instead, is the Embroidered Room: the walls are covered in embroidered silk fabric with scenes from Jerusalem Delivered. In-depth information on this House Museum can be found in House museums in Italy. After eight seasons without a title and watching Mercedes brutally dominate Formula One for the last three years, Ferrari is again not only winning races, but also challenging for championships.
Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari’s lead driver, says the team has “unleashed its potential.”
Vettel heads into the sixth round of the series in Monaco on Sunday leading the drivers’ standings by six points over Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, after winning two races in Australia and Bahrain, and finishing second in China, Russia and Spain.
Although Mercedes leads the constructors’ championship this year, it is by only eight points over Ferrari. Hamilton recognizes that Vettel and Ferrari are serious contenders after the work the team has done to improve its car.
Hamilton beat Vettel in Spain on May 14 by just 3.4 seconds. “It was the rawest fight I can remember having for some time, which I loved,” Hamilton said.
Vettel is also again enjoying the competition, after changes that have made the cars faster, with more downforce and grip, but have also made them harder to drive.
“Down the straights, we were faster than ever last year, but that’s not really a skill. You don’t need to do anything to go straight, other than hit the throttle. But in the corners, that’s when you feel alive, and where these cars more closely resemble those I remember when I started out in Formula One in 2007.”
After the last of his four successive titles with Red Bull in 2013, Vettel endured a lean three years, winning just three races over that period.
The wins were all in his first year with Ferrari in 2015, when he finished a distant third in the drivers’ standings behind Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who was with Mercedes at the time.
The unleashed potential Vettel describes has been more than three years in the making, since the arrival of the current hybrid engine era in 2014. Mercedes won 51 of the 59 races from 2014 to 2016, forcing Formula One to change some of its regulations to break the team’s dominance.
Ferrari, which has not won a championship since 2008, was viewed by many Formula One experts as a team in disarray, especially toward the end of an abysmal 2014.Maurizio Arrivabene was then handed the reins by a new chief executive, Sergio Marchionne, who also heads Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which owned Ferrari at the time.Despite an upturn in 2015, yielding the three wins for Vettel, a poor start to 2016 prompted Marchionne to restructure Ferrari.Lorenzo Sassi subsequently took charge of the power unit department, while Enrico Cardile was named to run the aerodynamics department.

35th America’s Cup, Bermuda, Official opening ceremony & day 1 of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers postponed to Saturday 27th May
The America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA), and America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM), have announced that the strong winds in Bermuda has meant that day one of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers and the Official Opening Ceremony of the 35th America’s Cup has had to be postponed.
Forecasts indicate that winds may gust over 30 knots during the afternoon and evening, so with the safety of the sailors and spectators as the key priority, ACEA and ACRM have decided to postpone Friday’s events. Saturday 27th May and the days following are all forecast to have significantly improved weather conditions, so the four races scheduled to take place on Friday 26th May will now be added to the race schedules for the subsequent days.
The Official Opening Ceremony of the 35th America’s Cup will now take place on Saturday 27th May, starting at 8.30pm, following the three time Grammy award winning entertainer Wyclef Jean’s performance on the Main Stage in the America’s Cup Village at 5.15pm. The America’s Cup Village will close at 9.30pm. Gates open at 11.30am on Saturday, with racing due to take place between 2pm and 5pm.
Sir Russell Coutts, CEO of the ACEA, said, “We are obviously disappointed that the strong winds mean we have had to postpone day one of the 35th America’s Cup. This is clearly a decision we have not taken lightly and appreciate the inconvenience caused to the sellout crowd. Our primary concern however, is always safety for everyone involved in the America’s Cup. We are adding an hour to the race window on both Saturday and Sunday to run extra races with the aim of getting back on schedule. There are still tickets available at the weekend, although not in all categories, so we are hoping Friday’s ticket holders will still get the chance to enjoy what should be an incredible opening weekend.”

Tattersalls 265 million guineas turnover celebrates Tattersalls 250 years as bloodstock Auctioneers.
The fourth and final day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale bought to a close another record year at Tattersalls with turnover topping a record 265 million guineas, the third year in a row that it has surpassed 260 millon guineas.
The final session saw a total of 106 lots sell for 616,500 guineas, taking the four-day breeding stock turnover to 44,709,200 guineas, at an average of 65,652 guineas and a median of 27,000 guineas.
The star attraction on the final day was ARABESCATTA, the MONSUN sister to Group 1 Irish Derby runner-up MIDAS TOUCH and to the recent Listed Zetland Stakes winner CORONET who is second favourite for next years Oaks. Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, the eight-year-old mare out of the DARSHAAN mare APPROACH was knocked down to Federico Barberini for 38,000 guineas on behalf of Kildaragh Studs Peter Kavanagh.
“She is by Monsun with a huge page,” said Barberini of the mare whose pedigree includes Classic and Group 1 winners AUSSIE RULES, ALLEGRETTO, ALBANOVA and ALBORADA.
At the conclusion of the 2016 Tattersalls December Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;
2016 has been an historic year for Tattersalls. It is 250 years since Richard Tattersall founded the worlds first company of bloodstock auctioneers and we are proud custodians of that legacy. We are equally proud that the company has marked this special year with record annual turnover in excess of 265 million guineas and that the Tattersalls December Sale has reinforced its reputation as probably the most international bloodstock sale in the world. It has been a privilege to have welcomed buyers this week from every continent in the world and they have all contributed to a uniquely diverse sale which has brought our anniversary year to a successful conclusion.
The unprecedented annual turnover demonstrates the sustained appetite for quality European bloodstock in all sectors of the market and this has been clearly reemphasised throughout the December Sale. Record demand at the October Yearling Sale and the Autumn Horses in Training Sale has been followed by truly global participation this week. While the catalogue may not have been regarded as a vintage one, it has still inspired vibrant international competition, particularly at the top end of the market, with the outstanding mare HAZARIYA deservedly topping the sale at 2 million guineas, high class race fillies consistently commanding premium prices, and the annual major consignments from both Godolphin and Juddmonte Farms proving as ever to be hugely popular.
Eight of the top ten highest priced foals in Britain and Ireland, 76 foals selling for 100,000 guineas or more and a further 110 breaking the six figure mark this week, are all clear indicators of a market in which quality has been well rewarded. The ten highest priced mares and fillies this week were sold to buyers from Britain, France, Ireland, Japan, South Africa and the USA, while buyers from Australia, China, and the Gulf region also made significant contributions at every level of the market. As ever, we must thank our vendors, British, Irish and from further afield, who make the Tattersalls December Sale the premier sale of its type in Europe. Every year we visit as many overseas markets as possible, but the consistent support from our vendors is equally crucial in annually attracting the major global players to the December Sale.
Although we can reflect on a successful and historic year, we are also mindful that there are sectors of the market which are facing major challenges. This time last year we reflected on the significant rise in the number of horses catalogued and offered at Tattersalls and the inevitable impact at the lower end of the market. This year we have endeavoured to manage the numbers in both the October Yearling Sale and the December Foal Sale more carefully, and clearance rates held up remarkably well, but this only masks the reality that demand in the lower tiers of the market is well below the level of supply. This is an issue we must all face together, but in the meantime we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to each and every purchaser and vendor, all of whom have played a part in a memorable 250th year of selling thoroughbreds at Tattersalls.” With Thanks & Courtesy Tattersalls
The next sale at Tattersalls is the February Sale which takes place from February 2 3. Entries are now being taken.
Tattersalls December Mare Sale Newmarket
The second day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale was, as ever, a truly international affair with buyers from four continents represented by the top ten lots. The headline act of the day was HAZARIYA, the dam of HARZAND, topping proceedings at 2 million guineas. A total of 186 lots sold for 25,512,500 guineas with an average of 137,164 guineas and median of 60,000 guineas.
The star of the show on Tuesday of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale was the dam of this years dual Derby winner HARZAND. A packed sales ring turned out to see HAZARIYA, in foal to INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, knocked down to MV Magnier, standing with Michael Jooste of South African-based Mayfair Speculators, for 2 million guineas.
The Newsells Park Stud offering was herself a good race filly winning the Group 3 Athasi Stakes at The Curragh before retiring to stud where she has produced five winners including Listed Finale Stakes winner HAZARAFA, Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes winner HARASIYA and of course Group 1 Epsom and Irish Derby winner Harzand.
Lot 1826: Hazariya (IRE)
The half-sister to American wonder mare ZENYATTA was another to top a million guineas on the second day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. US-bred EBLOUISSANTE in foal to DANSILI will be heading back to her country of birth having been bought by Jane Lyon of Kentucky-based Summer Wind Farm.
Consigned by The National Stud, the well-related seven-year-old mare is a half-sister to triple Grade 1 winner BALANCE in addition to ZENYATTA who won an incredible 19 out of 20 starts during her race career which included a tally of seven Grade 1s. Courtesy & with thanks Tattersalls
Rediscovered Lenin 65 foot glass mural. From the Berlin Wall to Miami Beach.
An Art historian in Germany has finally recovered an impressive art work that had been commissioned by the STASI, the redoubtable East German Secret Police in 1979. before the Berlin wall came down. Richard Otfried Wilhelm was the artist who created this 3 ton, 65 foot wide, 10 foot high glass mural. Lenin’s portrait is clearly identifiable. Mr. Wilhelm titled the work “Revolution: Frieden unserem Erdenrund” (Revolution: Peace to the Whole World), an incongruous title for a symbol of a repressive regime. In the centre is an image of Lenin, and there are two doves, symbolizing peace — both common iconographical elements in East German monuments, Mr. Melching said, an expert in German Cold War history at the University of Amsterdam.
The work will be shown in a pop up Galerie at NETZWERK during Art Basel Miami Beach Fair. It is for sale for over $21.million.
Erich Mielke, the Stasi Agent, who died in 2000, commissioned in 1979 the artist Richard Otfried Wilhelm, who was then the chief master of glass for public works in the German Democratic Republic, and one of the few East German artisans trained in Gothic stained glass techniques dating back to the 14th century.
The 10-foot-high X 65 feet glass wall is pigmented with precious metals — including 55 pounds of gold — and has a hammer and sickle symbol, a slogan of the international communist movement and references to the French Revolution.
After the Berlin Wall fell, the Stasi headquarters were closed in 1990, and the agency’s assets were sold through the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the state railroad company. Eberhard Dümmen, the owner of an art logistics company and Mr. Holzmann’s uncle, learned about the work from one of his employees who had worked for the Reichsbahn. He bought it for an unknown sum — records of the sale have been destroyed, and Mr. Holzmann said Mr. Dümmen does not recall what he paid — loaded it into a shipping container, and placed it in a storage lot in Berlin.
Mr. Holzmann said “I knew about it all these years, but for all these years, I, like everyone else, was forgetting what was forgotten,” Mr Holzmann asked about the fate of the glass work several years ago. When Mr. Dümmen said it was still probably where he left it, Mr. Holzmann tracked it down in the Berlin neighbourhood of WeissenSee.
He called Susanna Lilienthal, a conservator who played a central role in the restoration of the sixth century B.C. Ishtar Gate at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. She saw the work in August 2015. “When the container opened, history came out,” she said.
Mr. Holzmann, who is representing his uncle in the sale, said the craftsmanship and the extraordinary story are what make the piece worth $21.4 million. He said he hoped to sell it to a museum or a private individual who will donate it to a public institution.
But Mr. Melching said he would be surprised if it brought anywhere near that price. “Maybe a couple of hundred thousand euros, but millions is a bit ridiculous,” he said.
Sjeng Scheijen, an associate researcher at Leiden University who curated an exhibition about Stalin-era propaganda art at the Drents Museum in Assen, the Netherlands, agreed. “The quality of this piece is certainly not exceptional from an artistic point of view,” he said. “If they will sell it for this price, you will see a storm of the same kind of art coming on the market, because many of these kinds of stained glass windows are very often in buildings from the ’70s and ’80s that aren’t used any more.”

EI Editorial Intelligence awards the Comment Awards. A leitmotiv of unease & uncertainty seemed to have been the underlying theme of the year’s excellent series of comments.
EI Editorial Intelligence held their Comment Awards at the RIBA on Wednesday 23 November. 7.30.a.m. A large crowd of smart young Media people sleek and shiny moved into the large light hall of the RIBA. As the Awards were given out it became evident that several of the Awards,8, were awarded to female journalists. It also seemed that the commentators had had a thrillerama of a year. Listening to the summing up of the Year’s commentariat it seems to us that whatever side of the spectrum seemed to share the leitmotiv of unease & uncertainty.

Paolo Coelho inspirational Brazilian writer of The Alchemist publishes a new book, “The Spy.”
Paolo Coelho The inspirational Brazilian writer has written a new book, The Spy, based on Mata Hari’s life, as a spy in Europe. In 1986, Coelho walked the 500-plus mile Road of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, a turning point in his life. On the path, Coelho had a spiritual awakening, which he described autobiographically in The Pilgrimage.[12] In an interview, Coelho stated “In 1986, I was very happy in the things I was doing. I was doing something that gave me food and water – to use the metaphor in The Alchemist, I was working, I had a person whom I loved, I had money, but I was not fulfilling my dream. My dream was, and still is, to be a writer.” Coelho would leave his lucrative career as a songwriter and pursue writing full-time. Extract from Wikipedia with thanks.
Richter painting for sale, est.$ 25-$35.000.000. Phillips 20th Century & Contemporary Art Auction New York 16th November 2016
Gerhard Richter’s Düsenjäger dates from 1963, the most important juncture in his career, when he had begun to create the Photo Paintings that were to garner such recognition. This picture dates from the very inception of Pop Art, and reveals both the similarities and differences between its incarnations on each side of the Atlantic. With its muted tones and political undertones, this is the embodiment of ‘Capitalist Realism,’ the German Pop Art movement founded at precisely this time by Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke and Konrad Lueg (who later became known as the gallerist Konrad Fischer). Looking at the official list of Richter’s paintings, which he began only the previous year, the importance of Düsenjäger becomes all the more apparent: it is listed as number ’13-a,’ one of the earliest of his recognised works. In addition, Düsenjäger is part of a small and celebrated group of pictures of warplanes, created by Richter between 1963 and 1964. Of these, four are in museum collections, all of them in his native Germany. Düsenjäger and another painting, Bomber, were the only ones from this series created in 1963, the others all coming the following year, underscoring its seminal importance. Jaguar has confirmed that it will build an electric car, and has revealed a concept called the I-Pace that shows how it could look.
The I-Pace is making its debut at the LA motor show and will go on to be Jaguar’s first pure electric vehicle. It will take the form of an SUV to rival the recently launched Tesla Model X, albeit with a sleeker profile if this concept is anything to go by (and rumours suggest that it is).
It is claimed that the new car will have a range from a single charge of 310 miles, and will be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in about four seconds, meaning it will rival all but the very quickest of sports cars. BMW Electric sports car BMW i3. Has been chosen as the Dow Jones Sustainability index automotive leader for eight years.
Dr Alexander Kotouc will take to the stage at next week’s Global Superyacht Forum in a keynote presentation entitled ‘Smart, Sustainable Mobility’. Kotouc currently oversees the current and future product portfolio of the BMW i brand, including the BMW i8 hybrid sports car and the all-electric BMW i3. Having been chosen as the Dow Jones Sustainability index automotive leader for eight years, it is no surprise that these vehicles are leaders in their field, pushing the boundaries of what is to be expected of an electric car, while for the charging stations is good to have markings in the street for this and they’re easy to get from sites like https://carparkmarkings.co.uk/ev-bay-markings.
With more technology now focused on sustainability and ‘green’ options, the luxury industry – yachting included – has at times been resistant to these changes. Kotouc believes, however, that BMW i are turning this impression around. “We strongly consider sustainability as a factor becoming more and more decisive for premium buyers,’ he notes, with buying patterns changing considerably in this luxury sector, “Around 85% of all BMW i3 customers are new to the BMW brand, meaning they hadn’t taken a traditional BMW into account.”
To Kotouc, there is no question of the future of sustainable technologies within the automotive industry, “We will see electric propulsion systems overtaking the traditional petrol and diesel engine within the next 25 to 30 years.” Indeed, BMW i’s latest concept is the iNext, is an “all-connected iconic vehicle with autonomous driving capabilities and an even higher level of sustainability throughout.” Electric car owners can utilize the ev ladekabel typ 1 to charge their cars.
For Kotouc, the future for ‘green’ transport shouldn’t be restricted to adaptions on original cars to curtail pollution, but re-evaluating the entire process of designing, engineering and using transport, “Sustainability for us means more than just cars without an exhaust pipe. Our target is to avoid emissions even in the production process and supply chain. We call this “Holistic Sustainability.”
BMW i are spearheading sustainable automotive development and the key to their success? Looking at the emotional side of driving, “Sustainability has traditionally lacked emotional appeal. Therefore, we put a strong focus at BMW i as progressive, an aspirational design and driving pleasure.” It is here where the automotive and yachting markets have strong ties, with many owners citing their pure love of the yachting world as their commitment to the industry. Perhaps it is in this vein that yachting must drive forward sustainability, or as Kotouc notes, “Sustainability sells when it appeals to your heart, not just your brain…”
Therefore, what can attendees expect from Kotouc’s session next week? “Inspiration for our world of tomorrow, and that sustainability does not mean sacrifice.”

David Bowie Art collection sells at Sothebys auction 10th November 2016. Star oeuvre Basquiat for over £7 million.
Agence France-Presse
11 NOVEMBER 2016 • 5:44AM
David Bowie’s art collection went under the hammer on Thursday with one item reaching more than £7 million at auction, as buyers’ enthusiasm for the late musician’s collection exceeded expectations in London.
The highest-selling item in Bowie’s collection, the graffiti-inspired “Air Power” canvas by Basquiat, sold for £7.09 million at Sotheby’s auction house.
The piece had been expected to fetch between £2.5 and £3.5 million.
Bowie bought “Air Power” and another painting by the artist, who died from an overdose in 1988 aged 27, shortly before the 1996 biopic “Basquiat,” in which the rocker played his early idol Andy Warhol.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton presents the exhibition “Icons of Modern Art – The Shchukin Collection” from October 22, 2016
From October 22, 2016 to February 20, 2017, the Fondation Louis Vuitton features an exhibition that pays tribute to one of the greatest art patrons of the early 20th century, Sergei Shchukin, the visionary Russian collector of French modern art, whose collection “remains little known to the general western public even today” states Anne Baldassari, curator of the exhibition. “In fact, since it was broken up in 1948 it has never been gathered as a singular and coherent artistic entity”, continues Baldassari.
Thanks to the generous contribution of the Hermitage Museum and the Pushkin Museum, the exhibition presents a significant ensemble of 130 major pieces of French modern art in dialogue with 30 works of Russian avant-garde art. Throughout his life Shchukin collected works by impressionists, post-impressionists and modern masters including Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Rousseau, Derain, Matisse, Picasso, Degas, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh.

Palazzo Reale Turin
Begun in 1646 by the royal madam Christine of France to substitute the old palazzo del Vescovo, it keeps intact the façade by Carlo Morello (1658). The building made in a square plan, with internal courtyard, was residence of the kings of Sardinia until 1859 and of Vittorio Emanuele II, king of Italy, until 1865.
The decorations and interior furniture testify the passing of numerous artists that worked there from the 17th to the 19th century.
Going up the monumental staircase by Domenico Ferri (1864-1865) decorated by paintings and 18th century statues, with the only exception of the monument to Vittorio Amedeo I, you reach the first floor, where the tour begins.

Edited by Jeffrey Deitch and Gianni Mercurio.
With nearly 100 works from private collections, the exhibition runs through the short but intense career of Basquiat, which ended with the premature death at the age of only twenty-seven.
Directly and seemingly childish Basquiat and ‘was able to bring to the attention of the general public with basic issues about human identity and painful issue and open the race.
It was a key figure in contemporary American history because it is able to weave, unique for its time, the urban energy damned New York with its roots marked by slavery and the diaspora.
Twenty years after his first exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1992-1993) and ten years after the retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (2005), this exhibition will show the central role of Basquiat in the generation of his peers artists and function of his art as a bridge between different cultures.

Saudi Arabia Monarch meets President of Venezuela, to discuss oil prices.

Below is an extract from ARABIAN BUSINESS
The king of Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, met Venezuela’s president on Sunday 23rd October 2016 in Riyadh and discussed ways to stabilise global oil prices, state news SPA reported.
King Salman and President Maduro “reviewed areas of bilateral cooperation… and the latest developments including cooperation for the stability of oil markets,” SPA said.
Saudi Arabian Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said earlier on Sunday that the views of the kingdom and Russia, the world’s top oil producer, on the need to stabilise the market “are getting closer”.
“We have managed today… through a common meeting to reach a common notion to what we can reach in November,” Falih said, referring to an OPEC meeting in Vienna on Nov. 30, when the exporting group is set to finalise a production cut agreement.
Novak, who is in Saudi Arabia on his first official visit as minister, earlier met the energy ministers of the GCC which included key Gulf OPEC producers Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and Qatar.
President Maduro was quoted on Saturday as saying that OPEC and non-OPEC nations were “very close” to an agreement on oil production curbs, Azerbaijan’s state news agency Azertag reported.
The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) agreed in Algiers on Sept. 28 to reduce production to a range of 32.5 million to 33.0 million barrels per day, which would be its first output cut since 2008.

Michael Cunningham, Pulitzer Prize Winner, new book. By Nightfall.
Peter and Rebecca Harris: mid-forties denizens of Manhattan’s SoHo, nearing the apogee of committed careers in the arts—he a dealer, she an editor. With a spacious loft, a college-age daughter in Boston, and lively friends, they are admirable, enviable contemporary urbanites with every reason, it seems, to be happy. Then Rebecca’s much younger look-alike brother, Ethan (known in thefamily as Mizzy, “the mistake”), shows up for a visit. A beautiful, beguiling twenty-three-year-old with a history of drug problems, Mizzy is wayward, at loose ends, looking for direction. And in his presence, Peter finds himself questioning his artists, their work, his career—the entire world he has so carefully constructed.
Like his legendary, Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Hours, Michael Cunningham’s masterly new novel is a heartbreaking look at the way we live now. Full of shocks and aftershocks, it makes us think and feel deeply about the uses and meaning of beauty and the place of love in our lives.< (less) Courtesy With thanks ReadMore

Treve, mythical double winner of the Arc de Triomphe’s full sister, Terre, who trainer Christiane Head-Maarek hoped would be ready to race in Deauville at the end of August, looks more likely to be ready to race a Chantilly in September. Time will tell if she will become a champion like her sister. Madame Head says she likes the Filly, who seems stronger than Treve was at the same age.

Wertheimer Freres bred Akihiro, sired by Deep Impact Japanese Triple Crown Champion, wins at Hippodrome Deauville, organised by France Galop.
Deep Impact Japanese Phenomenon.
By the time the Europeans realised it the Japanese horse racing phenomenon Deep Impact was already well established in Japanese horse breeding.
Akihiro won tuesday at Deauville, Prix de Crevecoeur. Owned and bred by the Freres Wertheimer (owners of Chanel). Trained by Andre Fabre. Hippodrome de Deauville racing organised by France Galop.
French breeders are working hard to improve the bloodlines of their race horses.
Akihiro is a son of Deep Impact, a top Japanese stallion, as was his father Sunday Silence. The Wertheimer invest strongly in their horse breeding venture, to establish new promising blood lines, the Japanese enterprise may prove very fruitful. The Prince Aga Khan also invests in developing new blood lines at his various studs, including bringing over Australian stallions & investing in the Lagardere string.. The Wertheimer have established an impressive pool of mares including the champion, Goldikova.
Also issue of this Deep Impact bloodline, 5 year old A Shin Hikari ran in May 2016 at Chantilly in the Gr.1 Prix d’Ispahan, winning impressively against a strong field of French race horses.
This 5 year old horse, A Shin Hikari, actually rated 123, is considered to be the best in her age group in the World at the moment !
9 horses issue of Deep Impact have run in France. 7 of these horse have won so far:-2 have won Group1 races Beauty Parlour (headlining the Goffs Wildenstein dispersal) & A Shin Hikari. Another of these horses won a Group2, Kizuna. Another won a Group3 Aquamarine. Finally Barocci won a Listed race
Deep Impacts products are particularly successful so far.
The Japanese would love to win one of the World’s most prestigious races, the mythical Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
This year 8 Japanese horses signed up to race in the Prix de l’Arc, are issue of Deep Impact including Japanese Derby winner, Makahiki.
Andre Fabre selects Ame Bleu, Ballymore Thoroughbred, Director Diane Wildenstein, to run in the Prix Jean Romanet, organised by France Galop.
Just before leaving in his gleaming black Bentley, a relaxed Monsieur Andre Fabre, the immensely successful trainer, when asked for a comment, today, as he left the Deauville Hippodrome, about the Goffs dispersal of the prestigious Wildenstein string of race horses, reminded us that there was some consolation with the Diane Wildenstein horses.
A Director of Ballymore Thoroughbred limited is in fact Diane Wildenstein.Ballymore’s are not part of the Goffs dispersal arrangement of the very important Wildenstein string of top race horses. Diane Wildenstein is the daughter of the late Alec Wildenstein, the former art dealer. The Wildenstein Art Empire’s complex financial affairs are under investigation, it has been reported. Caravaggio may be racing against Lady Aurelia & Mehmas for the Prix Morny in Deauville 21st August 2016. A very exciting prospect.

Goffs Secure The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal…The news has been officially confirmed. Extract enclosed from the Goffs Press Release, courtesy & with thanks Goffs
Goffs has been appointed as the exclusive Auction House to handle The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal. The world class draft of 110 horses features mares (27), foals (20), yearlings (19), and horses in training (44). The dispersal will be handled by The Castlebridge Consignment and takes place during the Goffs Orby and November Sales, with the yearlings and horses in training being offered at the end of the second day of the Orby Sale in an exclusive stand-alone section, whilst the mares and foals will be offered at the November Foal and Breeding Stock Sale.
This is a rare opportunity to tap into the bloodlines belonging to one of Europe’s most successful breeders. French 1000 Guineas winner and Oaks runner up Beauty Parlour (pictured) headlines a spectacular group of broodmares. Beauty Parlour will be sold in foal to Kingman whilst her 2015 colt by Dubawi is surely one of the standout yearlings in Europe this year with her Dansili filly foal another obvious highlight in November. Beauty Parlour’s half-sister, the winning Invincible Spirit filly Blue Kimono will also be offered for sale at Goffs and is in foal to Australia.
The Group 2 winning Sadler’s Wells sister to Peintre Celebre, Peinture Rare, in foal to Dansili is another high class mare bound for Goffs while her yearling colt by Oasis Dream is also among the dispersal. The Peintre Celebre mare Andromeda Galaxy, a Listed-winning granddaughter of Albertine, would fit nicely in any broodmare band, as would her Listed-placed sister Altamira, whose daughter Akatea ran second in last year’s Prix du Moulin.
Other breeding stock highlights include the Stakes placed Galateia out of the Classic placed Gagnoa who is a three-parts to Derby winner Pour Moi, while the Stakes placed Galileo mare Amerique, in foal to Pivotal, is out of the Group 1 winner and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe runner up Aquarelliste. Listed winner and Group 1 performer Adventure Seeker from the family of the great All Along, in foal to Siyouni, is another with huge international appeal, while the Group 2 winner mare Pacific Rim will be offered in foal to Zoffany.
The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal features blue blooded yearlings and foals with a sire profile that includes Dansili, Dark Angel, Dubawi, Giant’s Causeway, Invincible Spirit, Le Havre, Lope De Vega, Oasis Dream, Pivotal, Shamardal, Teofilo and many others.
The draft of 44 horses in training includes the Listed winner and Group 2 placed Smart Strike filly Lady Of Kyushi, the winner and Group placed Dalakhani filly Asterina, and the winning Giant’s Causeway colt Andrea Mantegna as well as several other winning three and four year olds and a quality draft of 26 juveniles.
Announcing the details of The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:
“The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal represents the most exciting collection of horses to be offered anywhere in the world this year and it is a real privilege for Goffs to be appointed the auction house of choice to handle the sale that looks set to draw every major international bloodstock buyer to Goffs in 2016. In my 34 years in the business there are a handful of names that you associate with the very best – Robert Sangster, HH The Aga Khan, Khalid Abdulla, the Maktoums, Coolmore, the Niarchos family for example, and the Wildenstein name is certainly amongst their number.

Trainer Wesley Ward was pleased Thursday morning after Stonestreet Stables, George Bolton & Peter Leidel’s undefeated Queen Mary (G2) winner Lady Aurelia, scheduled to make her next race outing in the August 21st Prix Morny (G1) at Deauville.worked 4 furlongs in 49:20 on Keeneland’s turf course.
“Lady Aurelia was brilliant. I am really excited,” Ward said. “We’ll see what happens here in a couple of weeks. ( a video exists of the interview see Keeneland.com)

The move marked the 3rd work here for Lady Aurelia since her 7 length victory in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 15th. Ward said he would like to work Lady Aurelia another time here on August 11th or 12th, before she ships to Chicago for a direct flight to Paris on the evening of August 13th.
In 2013 Ward won the Prix Morny with another Keeneland-based runner, No Nay Never, who had won the Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot. He said Lady Aurelia is following a similar schedule.
The 1st time, it was a little bit of unchartered waters, “Ward said about the experience three years ago. “I know how to do it now, and I know it can be done”.
Lady Aurelia, who was bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLP was consigned by James M. Herbener Jr. agent to Keeneland’s 2013 Yearling Sale & purchased by Bolton & Leidel for $350.000. The Scat Daddy filly commenced her career April 21 at Keeneland and won a 4 & half furlong maiden race by 7 & half lengths in track-record time.

Qemah came out on top at Royal Ascot but Alice Springs was forced to go the long way round after Ryan Moore found his route barred, before taking a while to get re-balanced and flying home for third.
Alice Springs banished those memories in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, however, where she clocked a new course record.
Alice Springs is a general 3-1 chance to gain revenge on her Royal Ascot conqueror, while Qemah just heads the betting at 5-2.

“Andre Fabre is delighted with the shape of Esoterique in her attempt to regain her Prix Rothschild crown at Deauville on Sunday.
After having captured the Group One prize in 2014, the six-year-old missed last year’s race in favour of a shot at the Prix Maurice de Gheest, in which she finished second.
Esoterique has this season failed to hit her best form in two starts, having been beaten at odds-on on her return at Deauville before trailing home last in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.”

Giovanni Soldini and the Maserati trimaran. With sights on the Rolex Middle Sea Race. & the RORC Transatlantic race. Co-Sponsor UnipolSai Assicurazioni.
The Italian yachtsman aboard the trimaran Maserati Multi70 for the 2016 season. With sights set on Rolex Middle Sea Race and RORC Transatlantic Race.
The 2016 season is getting underway on something of a high note for Giovanni Soldini and his partners with the move from their previous monohull to the new Maserati Multi70 trimaran. This faster, more modern craft will allow Soldini and his crew to tackle new records and compete in prestige competitions of the likes of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October and the RORC Transatlantic Race in November.
Flanking Giovanni Soldini this new season are Maserati, returning as main sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, and UnipolSai Assicurazioni which will be playing a more prominent sponsorship role in the project than last season. Also renewing their support as official challenge suppliers are: Ermenegildo Zegna for clothing and Boero Bartolomeo S.p.A. which supplies hull paint and enamels.
After an extremely busy and satisfying three years that saw them clock up an impressive number of nautical miles with the monohull Maserati VOR70, Soldini and his team will henceforth be sailing aboard Maserati Multi70, a cutting-edge, very high performance trimaran capable of making extremely fast speeds. Stretching 21.2 metres in length and 16.8 in the beam with a 29-metre mast, Maserati Multi70 can rise up off the water on her rudders and foils, significantly reducing her wetted surface area to the benefit of performance. The trimaran was originally penned by the VPLP (Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost) studio and optimised by Team Gitana in collaboration with Guillaume Verdier.
“We are just starting to discover Maserati Multi70’s potential. The passage from Lorient gave us our first taste: it was a positive and very enlightening experience,” commented Giovanni Soldini.
“This craft’s innovative character is all down to her appendages. Team Gitana transformed the starboard side with an L-foil and got her flying but always in sheltered waters.
We are now trying to find out if and how it is possible to do the same in a moderate swell. Clearly that will involve a lot of research and development work that we’ve only just begun but what we’ve seen so far is really enthusing us already”.
Three challenges are scheduled for this season: a Monaco-Porto Cervo record attempt, the Rolex Middle Sea Race and RORC Transatlantic Race.
In September, Maserati Multi70 will be on stand-by in Monte Carlo for the perfect weather window for an attempt to set a new multi reference time between Monaco and Porto Cervo, a 195-nautical mile route. The current record is held by the monohull Esimit Europa 2 which covered the distance in 10 hours, 13 minutes and 42 seconds in 2012, making an average speed of 19 knots.
The second challenge of the season is also the most important as the Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the great classic offshore races. Launched in 1968 and now on its 37th outing, it has attracted some of the leading names in international sailing over the years. The 608-nautical mile route starts and finishes from Malta and involves an anticlockwise circumnavigation of Sicily with the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi Islands, Pantelleria and Lampedusa to port of the fleet. The current race record was set by Rambler (USA) in 2007: she covered the 608 nautical miles in 47 hours, 55 minutes and 3 seconds.
Maserati Multi70’s third and final challenge of the year is the RORC Transatlantic Race, which starts from Lanzarote in the Canaries on November 26 and also marks her ocean debut. The fleet will cross the finish-line at Grenada in the Caribbean after around 3,000 nautical miles of sailing.

Not exactly a small museum, the 23-year-old Fondazione Prada’s 120,000-square-foot permanent venue in Milan (the foundation also has a palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal) is sited at a former distillery in the decidedly industrial south side of the world’s most fashionable city. Predictably, it was designed by starchitect Rem Koolhaas, who has also built stores for the fashion giant in New York and Los Angeles.
Koolhaas’s sober design is the opposite of the kind of flashy architecture recently revealed at other private museums around the world—consider Frank Gehry’s ditched sailboat at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and Diller, Scofidio + Renfro’s rhomboid with a veil at the Broad Foundation in Los Angeles. Additionally, the Fondazione’s sole patrons— Miuccia Prada and her partner Patrizio Bertelli—are not venture philanthropists in the mold of Eli Broad and Bernard Arnault. Not only does the couple give the appearance of being kinder, gentler billionaires, they have consistently declared their commitment to making their foundation “an expression of [artistic] freedom.” With thanks and courtesy ArtNetNews

PERPETUAL CALENDAR WATCH,BY THOMAS MUDGE, CIRCA 1762, £62.500 AUCTIONED AT SOTHEBYS, LONDON2016
Thomas Mudge’s 1762 perpetual calendar is one of the standout highlights from Sotheby’s The English Watch, Part II sale
Thomas Mudge is one of those names that simply sounds redolent of his time. An ingenious watchmaker, his work was overshadowed to a certain extent by more illustrious contemporaries such as John Harrison, John Arnold and Thomas Earnshaw, despite Mudge being the inventor of the lever escapement that’s been used almost universally since the 19th century and is only now in any danger of being superseded.
Best known for his design and sheer craftsmanship, he still won George Daniels’ vote as the “Freeman (of the Clockmakers’ Company) who added most to the prestige of British Horology”. Nevertheless, Lot 28 of Sotheby’s sale on July 7th (Part Two of their four-part Celebration of the English Watch), shows that Mudge was a creative a watchmaker as any.
Mudge
The watch is the first, so far known, ever to have incorporated a perpetual calendar and is one of two that Mudge is thought to have made. While perpetual calendars had already been used in clocks for some decades (both Thomas Tompion and George Graham produced examples), this was the first in a watch and was dated by George Daniels to 1762, crucially putting it two decades ahead of Breguet’s Marie-Antoinette masterpiece. Geneva. World Economic Forum. 7 principles for Public-Private Co-Operation. June 1st 2016
Over 70 leaders from business, government, academia and civil society met at the World Economic Forum to steward an action-oriented agenda on the Middle East and North Africa’s most pressing challenges.
Oil-price shifts have created an unprecedented opportunity for reforms in oil-importing and oil-exporting countries.
The World Economic Forum’s communities have defined seven principles for public private co-operation.
Geneva, Switzerland, 1 June 2016 – A select group of over 70 leaders from business, government, academia and civil society met at World Economic Forum headquarters in Geneva to steward an action-oriented agenda on the Middle East and North Africa’s most pressing challenges. Held under the theme “Redesigning Public-Private Cooperation for the Middle East and North Africa”, the meeting focused on two imperatives for the region: peace and prosperity.
Given the instability and geopolitical disruptions posing unprecedented challenges to prosperity in the region, participants explored the fragile security and humanitarian context. They agreed on the need for collaborative diplomatic action to help resolve conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, and for private-sector innovation in humanitarian aid delivery. “The World Economic Forum is committed to providing the international community a platform for greater public-private collaboration to respond to humanitarian and diplomatic imperatives,” said Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum.
The current reform momentum created by low oil prices is seen as a key enabler for prosperity in the region. The reform needs are well recognized but, due to their complex nature, how to successfully implement them is not. In addition, the broad range of social issues in the Middle East and North Africa makes it challenging to find political consensus for undertaking successful reforms, especially for unpopular but needed ones.
Seven Principles for Public-Private Cooperation
In a pledge to make complex reforms work, representatives of the World Economic Forum’s communities, including leaders from government, business and civil society, defined the following seven principles for public-private cooperation to promote an effective and inclusive reform process:
Create a clear vision – Leadership’s vision and political commitment are the most important prerequisites for successful reforms and provide the framework for planning and implementation
Establish an environment for trust – The decision-making process needs to be transparent and provide confidence that the reforms will genuinely benefit social and economic progress
Foster inclusive collaboration – Reform implementation needs to be a collaborative process among government, policy-makers, the private sector and civil society with the objective of generating balanced benefits for all citizens
Consult public beforehand and maintain momentum through regular communication – Along with effective communication, it is important to consult the public before planning reforms, continuously communicate during the process, and inform the public about the results achieved
Enable an ecosystem for accountability – Social and economic progress requires the government to establish an ecosystem that encourages and validates citizen demand for accountability
Attract and promote talent – Considering the national interest and complexity of reforms needed, their design and implementation call for consulting the best experts available
Build foundations for stability – Greater public-private collaboration is imperative to address the humanitarian crisis and build regional cohesion because peace is fundamental to prosperity
“The principles defined by our core communities take the agenda for public-private cooperation to a new level, consistent with the needs of the region today,” said Miroslav Dusek, Head of Middle East and North Africa and Member of the Executive Committee, World Economic Forum.
The World Economic Forum, committed to improving the state of the world, is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation.
The Forum engages the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

OECD PARIS. NEW NEXUS APPROACH NEEDED TO TACKLE PRODUCTIVITY & INEQUALITY, SAYS OECD REPORT.
OECD – Paris, 31 May 2016
New ‘nexus’ approach needed to tackle productivity and inequality challenges, says OECD report
Declining productivity growth and rising inequality are two of the biggest obstacles to improved economic performance, according to a new OECD report.
The Productivity-Inclusiveness Nexus explores the root causes behind each of these challenges, examining the extent to which they are connected, and at how to take a coherent policy response. In particular, it signals the need to expand the productive assets in an economy by investing in the skills of people and in an environment where all firms and regions have a chance to succeed.
The report discusses possible complementary explanations for the slowdown in productivity growth, which has affected some 90% of OECD countries since the turn of the millennium and has now spread to emerging market economies. It says the failure to translate rapid technological change into productivity growth reflects a mix of cyclical and structural factors.
One cyclical factor has been the persistently low investment in physical capital, in a context of weak global demand. On the structural side, there has been growing dispersion in productivity performance between leading, or ‘frontier” firms, and other companies that are lagging behind.
The report finds several, possibly complementary, explanations for the dispersion in productivity growth, such as the breakdown of technology diffusion and the possibility of growing capture of rents by the frontier firms. A related issue is the a lack of competition in certain markets, which may have on the one hand, allowed poorly-performing firms to linger, trapping valuable human and capital resources in unproductive activities, entrenching inequalities of income, while on the other increasing leading firms market power and raising barriers to entry.
Indeed, the Nexus report also shows that inequalities of income, wealth, well-being and opportunities have increased in a majority of countries. It highlights how different aspects of inequality tend to feed off of each other, hindering efforts to improve individual well-being and undercutting our economies’ productive potential. It notes in particular how low income groups and regions that have fallen behind tend to accumulate economic and social disadvantages.
Higher inequality results in fewer people in the bottom 40% of the population investing in skills, thereby worsening inequality and reducing productivity growth. The report says increasing productivity dispersion across firms appears to have contributed to a widening of the wage distribution over the past two or three decades.
The report highlights how the growth of the digital economy raises new challenges for jobs and skills. It adds that the growing weight of finance in the global economy may have diverted investment away from productive activities, while resulting in a higher concentration of wealth at the top of the income distribution.
‘’Tackling the ‘nexus’ of productivity and inequality challenges will require a new, coherent and multidimensional policy approach in order to ensure that all individuals, firms and regions can realise their productive potential and share in the benefits of improved productivity growth. In practice, this will call for measures that aim to help people, businesses and regions lagging behind,’’ said Gabriela Ramos, Special Counsellor to the OECD Secretary-General, Chief of Staff and Sherpa to the G20, who is heading the work behind the report in the context of the All on Board for Inclusive Growth Initiative.

Gotthard Base Tunnel opens, the European rail network that links Rotterdam to Genoa gains in time.
The world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel has officially opened in Switzerland, after almost two decades of construction work.
The 57km (35-mile) twin-bore Gotthard base tunnel will provide a high-speed rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe.
Switzerland says it will revolutionise European freight transport.
Goods currently carried on the route by a million lorries a year will go by train instead.
The tunnel has overtaken Japan’s 53.9km Seikan rail tunnel as the longest in the world and pushed the 50.5km Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France into third place. Info courtesy and with thank to the BBC.
