The Surrealists. Dickinson’s Gallery 58 Jermyn Street, Mayfair maintained their consistently well themed shows (Remember Delaunay at Masterpiece) & presented a stunning selection of the Surrealists. This unusual oil painting, above, “L’Empire des Lumieres”, 1949, by Rene Magritte became a cult image, and was initially bought by Industrialist Philanthropist Rockefeller to give to his secretary, Louise Boyer , as a Christmas present. Further versions of this theme went on to be painted & are now in Museum collections. such as the Guggenheim, MOMA in N.Y.,and the Musees Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique in Brussels. The latter museum has a fascinating selection of Magritte’s work and letters, beautifully handwritten, to his friends and colleagues. Amongst the other works on show at Dickinsons Frieze Masters stand is the fantastic “corset” by the luminous Frida Kahloo. This period of Continental art was so sophisticated, and unusual.
